In the “reliability charge” auction, held in February 2019, the “Termocandelaria” thermoelectric plant was assigned with firm energy obligations. In 2020, the company began the expansion of the power generation capacity of the plant
Cartagena de Indias.- In the facilities of the Termocandelaria plant, the cycle of works that will strengthen the capacity of the thermoelectric plant began, and which, by 2022, will be launched with the objective of increasing and boosting the supply of the electric power of the country.
This activity was attended by: Diego Mesa Puyo, Vice Minister of Energy; William Dau Chamatt, mayor of Cartagena; guild representatives; companies in the energy sector, commercial allies, financial entities, social organizations and members of the communities near the plant.
The commissioning of the Termocandelaria plant is projected to reduce more than 40% in the cost of energy production for Colombia. “Upon entering operations, silver will allow an 80% increase in its capacity for thermal generation to gas technology, combined cycle from the 314 MWh currently generated to 566 MWh, using the same fuel, without making new emissions atmospheric, with a reduction of more than 40% in the cost of energy production ”; said Miguel Pérez, general manager of Termocandelaria.
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Energy, Diego Mesa stressed that “this technology, in particular, is 35% more efficient, because it produces twice as much energy with lower consumption, and therefore generates less emissions.”
With an investment that reaches 220 million dollars, this expansion project will be financed with the resources coming from a bond issue, located at 186 million dollars, an operation that was carried out recently, and that had a demand of 2.7 times of the value offered.
“We are the first Colombian thermal generation company that has successfully made an international bond issue. Last year we had a first issuance for 410 million dollars, and in recent days we placed another that secured the financing of the expansion of the plant, which confirms the investment confidence in the country, and the electricity sector, ”said Eduardo Damian, President of Termocandelaria Power Limited (TPL).
The expansion project will be carried out by Técnicas Reunidas, a Spanish contractor with 60 years of experience that has built more than 1000 industrial plants around the world.
According to Luis Miguel Fernández Zaher, CEO of TPL, “approximately 600 indirect jobs will be generated during the work; It is expected that once the expansion will start operating, Cartagena and Cardique will receive greater transfers for the environmental rate, money that should be invested in environmental projects in the communities of the company’s area of influence. ”
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Energy, Diego Mesa said that “the generation of electricity from this gas plant will add reliability to the system with support and stability in the event of climatic variability such as the El Niño phenomenon, complementing the unconventional sources of energy renewable that we managed to incorporate from 2022. In addition, it promotes the use of gas that is considered the fuel of the energy transition because it is a cleaner energy that contributes to mitigate the effects of Climate Change ”.
Once the expansion works are completed, Termocandelaria will become “the most efficient thermal plant in the country, backed by natural gas from the national fields and the Cartagena regasification plant,” Fernández concluded.
